"Every good thing bestowed and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation, or shifting shadow" - James 1:17. This verse, Ben's favorite, proved true in his life. As he recalled, "My first prayer to God was to get roller blades, and God did it. But I still didn't fully believe that God existed." Despite his doubts, the Lord didn't stop working in Ben's life. He presented Himself to Ben over and over again through his Christian friends. "I was influenced by the people at Gunston Bible Church. I realized that everyone I knew there had a relationship with Christ. Over time, God won me over, and I asked Christ into my heart and was baptized."
Born in Vietnam, Ben came to the United States when he was three years old. The next sixteen years of his life would eventually lead him to Eyeris. "I met up with Eyeris after 2nd Stem broke up." A natural musician, Ben could play just about any instrument he could get his hands on. "I started with drums and trumpet in the sixth grade, though in grade school, I played the recorder." Ben also experimented with guitar, bass, trombone, and most recently, began playing keyboard. "I used to fill in on drums for Eyeris, but after 2nd Stem broke up I learned how to play the keyboard and joined Eyeris."
When asked about his favorite part of being a member of the band, Ben replied, "Eyeris to me is more of a ministry than a band because of the relationships and the people who have been affected by our music." Still, Ben treasured the friendships that he gained during his time with Eyeris, as he treasured the friendships he gained through the other aspects of his life.
If there is a word that you might use to describe Ben, other than "friend", it was "Marine". Ben seemed born to be a Marine, and after high school, he fulfilled a dream by enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps, even before he was naturalized as a U.S. citizen. "I want to be the best Marine I can be. I joined to make a difference, even it if means putting my life on the line."
His confidence in his salvation through Christ was the driving force that allowed him to make a statement like that. He loved the Lord, and looked forward to the day when he would see Him face-to-face. When asked who he would like to meet from the Scriptures, he quickly replied, "Eve, because I heard she was pretty." However, laughter quickly gave way to his real answer: "Moses. I would really like to ask him what it was like to see God." Ben finally got his chance.
